Origin: India. Thyme got its name from the Greeks, who used it as an aromatic in their burnt sacrifices; it shares its root with the words for 'spirit' & 'smoke.' There are many types of thyme: 60-70 species in the tiny leaved Mediterranean genus 'thymus' & as many or more in the common variety of thyme "thymus vulgaris"
